What strength is allowed. In the UK and EU, products sold to the public must contain no more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. Stronger whitening (0.1% to 6%) can only be provided by a dental professional after an examination, according to the General Dental Council. So home kits sold in the UK use PAP (phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid) or very low peroxide levels, and are gentler than dentist whitening. How to choose a UK kit. Check whether the PAP strength is stated, how long each session takes and how many treatments the kit holds, and whether there is a money-back guarantee or only returns of unopened kits. If your teeth are already sensitive, talk to a dentist first.

Home kit or dentist. The NHS recommends whitening by a dentist and says kits bought from a pharmacy or online do not work as well. A home kit is the lower-cost, lower-strength option; a dentist can also check your teeth and gums first.

LED kits or strips. LED kits use a gel with a mouth tray and light. Strips need no device (see best whitening strips).

What to expect. Whitening lightens natural enamel only, not crowns, veneers or fillings. Sensitivity is common and usually temporary.

Is it legal to whiten your teeth at home in the UK?

Stronger whitening (0.1% to 6%) can only be supplied by a dental professional after an examination, and not to under-18s. They can lighten surface stains, but they are milder than dentist whitening: the NHS says kits from a pharmacy or online do not work as well as whitening by a dentist. Does the LED light make a difference?

The evidence is mixed. Consumer group CHOICE quotes a dental professor who says small blue LED lights in home kits generally add little, and that teeth can look whiter at first partly because they dry out, with some of that fading as they rehydrate. The whitening gel does most of the work. A light that switches itself off can still make sessions easier to time.

Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?

It can. The NHS lists sensitivity and sore gums as common side effects, and a 2018 Cochrane review found them usually mild and temporary. healthdirect advises seeing a dental professional if it lasts more than 1 or 2 days. See whitening with sensitive teeth.

Will whitening work on crowns, veneers or fillings?

No. The NHS and healthdirect say whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, dentures, implants or fillings, so they can end up a different shade from your natural teeth. See stained teeth.
